What is a Learnership?

A CBM Learnership is a 12 month programme that combines classroom sessions with on-the-job projects in order to gain a formal qualification. Learners need to complete 6-7 Portfolios of Evidence (PoE) in order to prove their knowledge of the material.

What are the Benefits of a Learnership:

Financial:

  • Tax Rebates – Get an automatic R 80 000 rebate (R 40 000 on registration and R 40 000 on completition)
  • Mandatory SETA Grants – Claim back the learnership fee from the Skills Development Levy you pay each month
  • Discretionary SETA Grants – Request an additional “Extra” SETA grant for the full course costs, which if you haven’t claimed before, you should get!

Workforce:

  • Upskill your employees with a SAQA Accredited Qualification
  • Create a new pool of qualified people to employ – choose the best
  • More motivated workers leading to a lower turnover rate
  • Addresses your company’s succession planing and skills development
  • A RPL learnership with only 7 days out of the office and all the benefits

B-BBEE:

  • Skills Development contributes up to 25 points on your B-BBEE scorecard
  • Gain bonus points if you employ or put onto the next learnership in the following year
  • Claim the cost of the training and 12 months of salary towards your SD spend target
  • Include employees from suppliers or supported Black Companies to cover Supplier and Enterprise Development targets
  • Include a representative from a worthy NGO to cover your Socio Development target

What is the Difference Between Full Learnerships and Guided RPL Learnerships:

Full Learnerships involve a 12 month programme where learners attend 3-5 day long theory sessions, every 6 weeks. This is normally for students who have no prior work experience or knowledge. The learners undertake projects in order to complete Portfolios of Evidence.

Guided Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Learnerships are for people who have been in a position for a while and want a qualification in order to validate their knowledge. Learners attend 6-7 days, over a 12 month period, where they are guided on how to prepare their Portfolios of Evidence.

What are the Benefits of Running an Employed versus Unemployed Learnership:

Employed learners are your own staff members who benefit from the training. You are able to claim the cost of the learnership as well as their full salaries for 12 months towards your target for B-BBEE points.

Unemployed learners mean you don’t lose employee time while they attend sessions and you can train disabled learners for bonus points. They will need to gain work experience in your business and are paid a stipend which is claimable towards your target for B-BBEE points.
